Rooms were as expected, business hotel size. It was fine for us as a couple and our two adult children were ok in a double with one sleeping on the floor. The parking lot is very close to the hotel with allocated spaces and it costs a reasonable ¥1000 per day. You can come and go as you please. Only 10 minutes walk to the impressive Matsumoto-jo (the castle) and we enjoyed a special ftee sound and illumination event at night at the castle on the weekend we were staying. The owner is friendly and helpful. We felt welcomed. If we stay again we will use the free bicycles to ride around the city. This is a good hotel to use in Matsumoto.

The Southern Cross is perfectly located for sightseeing in Matsumoto. The staff are really helpful and it has nice touches like free coffee in reception 24/7, plus a couple of vending machines for soft drinks and beer. If you are travelling by car they have 4 parking spaces in a lot around the corner, available on a first come/first served basis, but there is also a paid parking lot almost opposite the hotel. There was a mix of Japanese and western food available for breakfast. The location is quiet but its only a five minute walk to the castle one way or the downtown area the other. It's an older hotel, but was spotlessly clean.

The gentleman at the front was genuinely nice. The buffet breakfast was great. The gentleman was able to answer my questions regarding ingredients, which was very helpful for an individual with allergies/ intolerances. They had complimentary Japanese ceramic tortoise charms at the front. The location is close to the Castle and they were happy to look after our luggage after checking out. Our stay in Matsumoto was such a pleasant one. Also, I liked that they maintained the good old door lock and key. We would stay at Southern Cross Inn Matsumoto again.

This hotel is great value for money and located less than 10 minutes walk from the famous castle which is the main reason people visit Matsumoto. It is also just a couple of minutes walk from the river and the Yohoshira Shrine, so all the main sights are within walking distance. The room was quite small but that is normal for hotels in Japan. They provide free coffee in the lobby 24 hours a day and allowed me to check-in at 1 p.m.; most hotels in Japan do not permit check-in until at least 3 p.m.
